The European Union has approved a new €6.1 billion funding package to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid Russia’s ongoing war against the country.
The European Commission said the funds will be used to provide air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radar equipment.
The decision was announced as Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of its independence and, according to the European Commission, reaffirms Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense and resilience in the face of continued Russian aggression.
Meanwhile, meetings of the Coalition of the Willing are taking place in Kyiv, with leaders expected to participate both in person and via video link.
European Council President António Costa has also arrived in the Ukrainian capital to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day and reiterate the European Union’s support for the country.
“Ukraine is a free and courageous nation. Its war is also our war,” Costa said.
The latest EU funding comes as Ukraine continues to face sustained Russian attacks across the country, with air defense remaining one of Kyiv’s key military priorities.
Ukraine’s Defense Forces meanwhile reported that 76 Russian drones had been destroyed over the Zaporizhzhia sector during the previous 24 hours.
According to local authorities, most of the intercepted drones were Russian-made Molniya models. Ukrainian air defense units reportedly prevented the drones from striking civilian targets.
The new European assistance underscores the EU’s continued focus on strengthening Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory and protect critical and civilian infrastructure as the war continues.
