Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that the current U.S. administration is making “sincere efforts” to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. He also hinted that Moscow and Washington could reach a new deal on nuclear arms control.
Speaking at a meeting in the Kremlin with top military and civilian officials, Putin announced that he would brief them on the status of Ukraine-related talks with the United States and on bilateral discussions with Kyiv.
“I would like to tell you about the stage we are at with the current American administration, which, as everyone knows, is making, in my opinion, quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the fighting, to end the crisis, and to reach agreements in the interest of all parties involved in the conflict,” the Russian president stated.
He added that a goal of the discussions with the U.S. is to create “long-term conditions for peace” and to reach a deal on “strategic offensive arms control” in the coming stages.
Upcoming Summit with Trump in Alaska
Putin is scheduled to hold a summit with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, in Alaska on Friday. The meeting is set to begin at 9:30 PM Kosovo time.
The U.S. and Russia hold the world’s largest nuclear weapons arsenals. The last remaining pillar of nuclear arms control between the two nations is the New START treaty, which is set to expire on February 5, 2026.
