The Kosovo Assembly has once again failed to elect a new Speaker, as today’s session ended without success.
The ruling party Vetëvendosje (VV) put forward a new candidate, acting Minister of Finance and MP Hekuran Murati, despite knowing that opposition parties had already declared they would not support any nominee who had served in the executive branch.
Unlike previous attempts, where the nomination was made by VV deputy leader Glauk Konjufca, today Murati was proposed by Donika Gërvalla, who herself failed to secure the necessary votes in Wednesday’s session.
Out of 115 MPs present, Murati received 57 votes in favor, 52 against, and 6 abstentions.
Session chair Avni Dehari confirmed that Murati had not obtained the required majority and therefore adjourned the session. The Assembly will reconvene on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
Asked who will be proposed as the next candidate, Prime Minister Albin Kurti responded with a smile: “You’ll find out on Sunday.”
According to the Constitutional Court’s ruling, a candidate’s name may be submitted for a vote only three times.
