LONDON (AP) — Preparations are underway at Windsor Castle as King Charles III gears up to welcome U.S. President Donald Trump for his second state visit — a historic first for any world leader.
The visit, beginning Tuesday evening, will showcase Britain’s signature pomp and ceremony, from glittering tiaras and antique silver to military parades and carriage processions. Beyond the grandeur, however, lies a clear political purpose: strengthening UK-U.S. ties at a time of global uncertainty.
Soft Power on Display
Royal historians highlight that state visits are the monarchy’s ultimate tool of soft power, often used to “reward friends and wring concessions out of reluctant allies.”
“The UK is buttering up to him,” said Robert Lacey, royal historian and consultant on The Crown. He noted that Trump’s admiration for the monarchy — and the fact that his late mother was Scottish-born — makes the royal connection a powerful diplomatic lever.
A Strategic Invitation
This invitation marks the first time a world leader has been granted a second state visit to Britain. Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally delivered the king’s letter of invitation to Trump just weeks after he began his second presidential term — a gesture Trump proudly displayed on television.
“A new Trump presidency, a new prime minister, a different government, but the same sense of urgency,” said Martin Farr, historian at Newcastle University. “The monarchy remains Britain’s strongest diplomatic tool.”
A Banquet of Symbolism
On Wednesday evening, the highlight will be the state banquet inside Windsor Castle. Guests will dine at the massive Waterloo Table, set with over 4,000 pieces of silver-gilt service, including egg cups and serving dishes dating back two centuries.
“The tiaras will be out in force,” said royal historian Hugo Vickers, noting the spectacle is designed to create goodwill before political talks.
Political Talks Ahead
After the glitter fades, serious discussions will take place Thursday at Chequers, the British prime minister’s countryside estate. Topics are expected to include trade negotiations and cooperation on Ukraine, with London hoping Trump’s visit can secure deeper U.S. engagement in European security.
