A new online scam, known as “Chicken Road,” is spreading rapidly across social media platforms such as TikTok and Telegram, targeting unsuspecting Albanians.
Unlike previous pyramid schemes that lured citizens into investing in cryptocurrencies, this new fraud operates under the guise of a simple online game. Players are invited to join the game with the promise of quick earnings, but once they “win,” they are asked to provide their banking details to receive supposed profits.
How the Scam Works
The scheme entices users with the illusion of easy money. Victims, after playing the game, are instructed to share personal and financial information. These details are then misused by cybercriminals to steal money directly from bank accounts.
Expert Warning
Cybersecurity lecturer Nadia Elbasani described “Chicken Road” as the next big wave of online fraud.
“Unlike cryptocurrency scams, which are complex and not fully understood by everyone, the gaming industry is accessible to all. That makes the risk of falling for this scam much higher,” she said.
Elbasani warned that using familiar Albanian figures within the game increases trust and makes the trap more convincing.
A Wider Social Risk
Experts stress that while scam techniques evolve over time, the human desire for quick profits remains the core vulnerability.
“Fraud has adapted through history to social, economic, and political changes. But its effect on individuals and society stays the same,” Elbasani added, calling on authorities to act before it’s too late.
Call to Action
Cybersecurity experts urge citizens to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal or financial details online. Authorities are also being pressed to strengthen monitoring of fraudulent schemes circulating on social platforms.
