Rrahman Jasharaj, head of the United Union of Education, Science and Culture (SBASHK), announced that currently there will be no strikes or protests by education workers until a new government is formed.
In a statement to IndeksOnline, Jasharaj emphasized that both the union’s Congress and Governing Council—the highest decision-making bodies representing employees from kindergartens to universities—have decided that dialogue will be attempted first. Only if dialogue fails will the Council determine the next steps, which may include strikes or other union actions.
He noted:
“Without a government, there can be neither dialogue nor strikes. For the moment, there are no protests or strikes because there is no government.”
SBASHK’s main demands include:
- Negotiation and signing of a new collective contract,
- Increase in salary coefficients,
- Implementation of the Constitutional Court decision on work experience compensation,
- Improvements in overall working conditions and labor rights.
Jasharaj added that their concerns go beyond salaries, highlighting the absence of collective agreements in Kosovo as an anomaly in both the Balkans and Europe.
The union’s last protest was held on December 4, 2024, demanding higher wages and the signing of a collective contract.
