US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will take part in the peace talks on Gaza between Israeli and Hamas negotiators in Egypt this Wednesday.
This comes as the second day of indirect talks on Tuesday ended without tangible results, according to a senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations who spoke to the BBC.
Trump maintained an optimistic tone on Tuesday, as Israel marked the second anniversary of Hamas’ attacks on October 7, saying that “there is a possibility that we will have peace in the Middle East.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not comment on the status of the talks but told Israelis they were in “decisive days.”
In a post on X, Netanyahu reiterated that Israel would continue pursuing its war objectives: “The return of all hostages, the elimination of Hamas’ regime, and ensuring that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel.”
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, seen as a key mediator, will also join the talks, a source told Reuters.
His participation aims “to push forward the ceasefire plan in Gaza and the agreement for the release of hostages,” the official added.
The Qatari Foreign Minister and the head of Turkish intelligence are also expected to join him.
