The United States is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to help end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine, as negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow enter a delicate phase.
American, Ukrainian, and Russian officials have held several meetings in recent weeks, aiming to find a peace formula that would ensure Ukraine’s long-term security.
In this context, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington is working to understand what the warring sides might be willing to agree upon, while battles on the ground remain concentrated in a relatively narrow area of the eastern front.
“What they are fighting over now is a space of roughly 30 to 50 kilometers in the remaining 20% of the Donetsk region. And so, what we have tried to do — and I think we’ve made some progress — is to understand what Ukrainians can live with that gives them security guarantees for the future, that they will never be invaded again, that allows them not only to rebuild their economy but also to advance as a country, to become a country with a growing economy,” Rubio told Fox News.
He added that the U.S. is also trying to determine what Russia would agree to, while dialogue toward a peace agreement continues under the mediation of Western allies.
