The Association of Albanians of Zadar County, in cooperation with the Union of Albanians in the Republic of Croatia and the Council of the Albanian National Minority of Zadar County, organized the event “Days of Albanian Culture and Albanian Youth Day,” which was met with a very large turnout from our fellow citizens.
This strong participation once again demonstrates the importance of togetherness, cooperation, and maintaining ties within our community.
We especially want to highlight the significance of the exhibition of historical photographs of our ancestors, through which we aimed to showcase the contributions Albanians have made to the Republic of Croatia throughout history. This exhibition reminds us of our duty to transmit our tradition, identity, and history from generation to generation, especially to our youth.
It is no coincidence that we decided to combine the two events, “Days of Albanian Culture” and “Albanian Youth Day.” This allowed for a richer program, greater participation, and an even stronger connection between the older and younger generations of our community.
It is important to mention that the Prefect of Zadar County apologized for being unable to attend, but his representative, Ms. Milena Ikić, participated instead, once again demonstrating that the Albanian community is well integrated into the social life of the county.
We will continue in this direction in the future, organizing as many events as possible. As often emphasized by the chairman of the Union, integration into Croatian society should not mean assimilation, and our duty is to preserve our national identity. For this reason, it is very important to encourage our children to follow supplementary Albanian language classes according to Program C, which in Zadar County is offered in both primary and secondary schools—a unique example in Croatia.
On this occasion, we also acknowledge Professor Vesel Lekaj, who works with great dedication for the revival and preservation of the Albanian language throughout the Dalmatian counties. The Union of Albanians in Croatia will always support such initiatives.
The chairman of the Union, who was in Zadar at the invitation of Chairman Nikollë Prekpalaj for this event, expressed in his welcoming speech the honor and pleasure of being in this beautiful region. He greeted the Prefect’s representative, Ms. Milena Ikić, the veterans of the Croatian Homeland War who attended in large numbers, and finally congratulated Chairman Prekpalaj for his dedication and organization of these activities.
It was also emphasized that Albanians proudly celebrate Flag Day—the day when Skanderbeg raised the Albanian flag in Krujë on November 28, 1443—a day representing one of the most important symbols of our national identity.
In conclusion, the chairman announced that the “Days of Albanian Culture” will close with the final event—Albanian Youth Day, which will be held on December 13 at the Antunović Hotel, inviting all fellow citizens to join.
