A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in a corruption case involving the purchase of luxury gifts for the state at below-market prices, according to the court and Khan’s lawyers.

This ruling is the latest in a series of legal challenges facing Khan, who has been in custody since August 2023 and faces dozens of charges since being removed from office in 2022. These charges range from bribery to leaking state secrets, all of which Khan denies, claiming they are politically motivated.

“The court announced the verdict without hearing the defense and sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison along with heavy fines,” said Rana Mudasar Umer, the family’s lawyer.

The court sentenced them to 10 years under the Pakistan Penal Code for breach of trust and an additional seven years under anti-corruption laws, alongside a fine of 16.4 million Pakistani rupees (approximately €50,000) each.
