Pope Leo XIV called on Ukraine and Russia to find the “courage” to engage in direct talks to end the war, during his first Christmas address before crowds in St. Peter’s Square.

In his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” message, delivered on Christmas Day to the faithful gathered in the Vatican City, the Pope also urged an end to conflicts worldwide, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and international support.

Speaking specifically about Ukraine, he said:

“I pray that the noise of weapons will cease, and that the parties involved, with the support and engagement of the international community, find the courage to engage in sincere, direct, and respectful dialogue.”

His plea comes as U.S.-led negotiations continue to seek a peace agreement to end hostilities. While the U.S. has offered to mediate between Kiev and Moscow, direct talks between the warring parties have not yet occurred in this latest round of diplomatic efforts.
