Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he will soon meet with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, to advance peace talks aimed at ending Russia’s ongoing war, now approaching its fourth year.
In a post on X, Zelensky said that an agreement has been reached to meet “in the near future”, adding that “many things can be settled before the New Year.”
“Rustem Umerov informed me of his recent contacts with the American side. We won’t waste a single day. We agreed on a top-level meeting – with President Trump in the near future. Many things can be settled before the New Year. Glory to Ukraine!” – Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The announcement follows Zelensky’s unveiling of a new 20-point plan, reportedly agreed upon by the U.S. and Ukraine, and his recent discussions with Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The plan proposes freezing the frontlines at current positions, but does not offer an immediate solution for territories occupied by Russia, which constitute about 19% of Ukraine. Unlike the original draft, the new version omits key Russian demands, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from parts of Donbas and Ukraine’s commitment to remain outside NATO, making it unlikely that Russia will agree. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow is “reviewing its position” but declined to comment on the details.
