Kyiv has come under attack, and Polish fighter jets were scrambled near the Ukrainian border, despite important peace talks taking place this weekend.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Kyiv was struck by missiles and drones early on Saturday, leaving at least eight people injured. As reported by Sky News, the airports of Rzeszów and Lublin in southeastern Poland were temporarily closed after Polish armed forces deployed fighter jets in response to Russian attacks on Ukraine. The airports were reopened once the air operation concluded.
In a post on Telegram, the Ukrainian Air Force said that two explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital, while the air raid alert remained in effect for around four hours after being activated. There were no immediate reports of damage or power outages.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he would hold a meeting this weekend with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
The two leaders are expected to discuss the details of a 20-point peace plan that is “around 90% ready,” according to President Zelensky. He told Axios that he is open to presenting the plan to the Ukrainian public through a referendum, provided that Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire that would allow Ukraine to prepare and hold the vote.
Sunday’s meeting marks the latest development in a broader U.S.-led diplomatic effort to end the nearly four-year-long Russia–Ukraine war, though the initiative has faced conflicting demands between Moscow and Kyiv.
