The United States is expected to officially withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday, despite warnings that this move could harm both public health in the U.S. and global health.

President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would leave the organization on the first day of his presidency in 2025 through an executive order. According to U.S. law, the country must give one year’s notice and pay all financial obligations before withdrawal.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State stated that WHO’s failure to curb, manage, and share information had cost the United States trillions of dollars, and that the president had exercised his authority to suspend any future transfer of funds, support, or resources from the U.S. government to WHO.
