Albulena Haxhiu has been elected Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, securing 66 votes in favor during a parliamentary session held on Wednesday, marking a key step in the constitution of the country’s new legislature.

According to official voting results, 44 lawmakers voted against her appointment, while 8 abstained.

Haxhiu’s election represents a notable political development, particularly given that she was previously nominated for the same position during the last legislative term but failed to secure the required majority of 57 votes. The earlier inability to confirm her candidacy contributed to a prolonged institutional deadlock, as the Vetëvendosje Movement (VV) had consistently maintained her nomination.

Following the impasse in the previous legislature, Dimal Basha was later elected as Speaker of the Assembly, allowing parliamentary functions to resume at the time.

Haxhiu’s successful election now comes as part of the ongoing process to establish Kosovo’s new parliamentary leadership after the recent general elections. The formation of Assembly leadership is considered a critical step toward enabling legislative activities and advancing government formation procedures.
