This Saturday, Eric Wendt will present his credentials to President Bajram Begaj at a ceremony scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Following the ceremony, the president and the new U.S. ambassador will also hold a one-on-one meeting.
After nearly three years without an appointed ambassador, the United States is restoring full diplomatic representation in Albania with the start of Eric Wendt’s tenure in Tirana.
He succeeds Yuri Kim, who concluded her mission in June 2023. During this period, the U.S. Embassy in Tirana was headed by Nancy VanHorn in the capacity of Chargé d’Affaires.
Eric Wendt’s nomination was put forward by President Donald Trump, and on August 6 he received confirmation from the U.S. Senate. He arrives in Albania with a career built primarily in the fields of military affairs and security, following more than 34 years of service in the U.S. military. He spent most of his career in the Special Forces, the “Green Berets,” and also led NATO’s Special Operations Command.
During his Senate hearing on May 20, Wendt outlined the priorities that will guide his tenure in Albania. He highlighted the fight against corruption, organized crime and drug trafficking, as well as strengthening cooperation in defense and cybersecurity.
At the same hearing, the incoming ambassador expressed his support for Albania’s Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), praising the cooperation between the special structure and U.S. law enforcement agencies. According to him, SPAK’s role remains essential as long as the institution maintains its independence and remains free from political influence.
His schedule of engagements in Tirana also includes an official reception on October 2, which is expected to be attended by representatives of Albania’s political spectrum.
