U.S. President Joe Biden strongly criticized Meta’s decision to end its fact-checking program, calling it “truly shameful.” Speaking after an economic address, Biden warned that this move would allow the spread of false information, which millions would be exposed to, reports Aljazeera.

He stated, “This goes against everything America stands for. We want to speak the truth.”

Biden’s comments followed similar remarks from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who criticized the lack of action on misinformation related to the wildfires in Los Angeles. Newsom emphasized the need to address false narratives that fuel divisions in society.

Meta announced on Tuesday that it would end its fact-checking program, opting instead for a system where users can evaluate information themselves, similar to the “Community Notes” system used by X (formerly Twitter). The company also revealed plans to ease its rules regarding political content.
