John Bolton, former National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump during his first term, recently stated that he has not ruled out the possibility of revisiting the idea of border adjustments between Kosovo and Serbia.
Bolton emphasized that achieving stability in the Balkans and resolving the Kosovo-Serbia issue is crucial for various reasons, one of which is minimizing Russia’s ability to create problems in the region.
“This is possible. I believe that stability in the Balkans and resolving this long-standing political conflict is important for many reasons. One of them is minimizing Russia’s chances of causing trouble in the Balkans. If you look at what’s happening in Moldova or the first round of presidential elections in Romania, I think Russian interference is clearly present,” Bolton stated.
When discussing finding a solution, Bolton compared it to the Macedonia name dispute, which he described as a positive resolution for all parties involved.
“Anything we can do that brings a solution – I’m not saying we should force something on anyone – but if it’s something that benefits everyone, like the case of Macedonia, which is now called North Macedonia, then if there is a way to bring good solutions for everyone, I think it should be a priority for America to find good-faith ways to close these conflicts. Everyone should turn the page, focus more on NATO and EU membership. Stability in the Balkans would be good for everyone. I’m not saying at all costs, but it’s something to keep in mind,” Bolton added.
