The Central Election Commission (CEC) has begun preparations for the organization of early parliamentary elections in Kosovo.

At this stage, before the official announcement of the election date, the CEC is focusing on initial and urgent matters related to the electoral process.

CEC spokesperson Valmir Elezi said the institution is currently engaged in preparatory work while awaiting the formal decision on the election date.

He also noted that all electoral activities, including the election campaign, will be organized within shortened legal deadlines due to the nature of early elections.

“The Central Election Commission has already begun the preparatory phase of the electoral process, engaging in addressing all initial and urgent issues related to the organization of early elections, which will be approved at the first meeting following the decision on the election date. These preparations include planning electoral activities, preliminary scheduling of timelines, budget planning, and coordination with relevant institutions,” Elezi said.

He added that, since these are early elections, one of the first decisions of the CEC will be the adjustment of electoral deadlines in line with legal provisions and available time.

“According to the Law on General Elections, early elections are organized within shortened timeframes. One of the first decisions of the CEC will be to adjust electoral deadlines and activities according to circumstances and available time. All key processes involving voters, political entities, and observers will be conducted within a short period,” Elezi stated.

He further explained that this includes deadlines for forming coalitions, party certification, candidate lists, the election campaign period, voter registration abroad, postal and diplomatic voting, as well as the accreditation of observers and media.

Regarding the campaign period, Elezi noted that it will be shorter compared to regular elections due to time constraints. In previous early elections, the campaign lasted 11 days and 7 hours, while the duration for the upcoming elections will be determined by the CEC.

On Wednesday, CEC Chair Kreshnik Radoniqi met with Acting President Albulena Haxhiu. Following the meeting, Radoniqi stated that the CEC prefers June 7 as the election date.
