The European Union will allocate €7.7 million this year to 12 municipalities in Kosovo that have demonstrated high performance, as part of the Municipal Performance Grant. The announcement was made by EU Ambassador to Kosovo, Aivo Orav, during a conference held today in Pristina.
Orav emphasized that the grant is not merely financial support, but a driving force for better governance and improved public service delivery at the local level.
“We are proud to support this initiative, which not only invests in municipalities but also strengthens local governance. The municipalities being rewarded have significantly improved their institutional performance and service delivery to citizens,” said Orav.
Also speaking at the event was Matthias Herr, Director for Eastern Europe at Helvetas, who highlighted the global challenges facing democracy, including migration, de-urbanization, and climate change.
“In times of global uncertainty, the local level becomes more important than ever. It is where democracy becomes tangible, where citizens see results. Empowered municipalities build stronger societies,” Herr stated.
The Municipal Performance Grant is implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Local Government Administration and aims to enhance standards of transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the recipient municipalities.
