The European Union has approved new sanctions targeting 1,569 individuals and entities linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on Monday.

In a social media post, Kallas said the new economic measures are aimed at Russia’s military industry, with more than half of the targets reportedly connected to the production chain for ballistic missiles.

The sanctions list includes 826 Russian companies and 743 individuals serving as executives at those companies, according to the announcement.

Those listed will face asset freezes, while the provision of funds or economic resources to them, directly or indirectly, will be prohibited. Individuals included on the list will also be subject to travel bans to EU member states.

The agreement among European countries on the new measures was reached last week but was formally ratified at the beginning of this week.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the EU to further tighten sanctions against Moscow, arguing that Russia has demonstrated that it is not serious about peace negotiations.

The latest measures come as the EU continues to use economic restrictions to pressure Russia over its war against Ukraine and limit its capacity to sustain military operations.
