The British Ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, has called on Kosovo’s political parties to work together and quickly establish the country’s institutions following the recent elections.
Speaking about the challenges facing Kosovo and Europe, Hargreaves stressed that the country urgently needs:
- A stable Parliament
- A functional Government
- A fully established Presidency
He said that after approximately 18 months of political uncertainty, Kosovo cannot afford further delays and that political leaders should cooperate in the national interest.
“The challenges facing this country and this continent cannot wait. After 18 months of uncertainty, I believe everyone agrees that political parties should work together for the good of Kosovo to create a stable parliament, a functional government, and a presidency as soon as possible.”
Hargreaves also emphasized the importance of:
- Building a state where all communities feel included and respected;
- Maintaining institutions that enjoy public trust because of their independence and integrity;
- Promoting a political culture where compromise is viewed as courage and responsibility rather than weakness.
The ambassador reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s long-standing support for Kosovo, stating that Britain has stood alongside Kosovo from the beginning and will continue to do so in the future.
“Kosovo should never doubt the support of the United Kingdom. We have been with you from the beginning and we will remain with you in the future.”
Political Significance
Hargreaves’ remarks come shortly after the German Embassy also expressed hope that Kosovo would establish institutions with a full mandate. Together, these messages indicate that key Western partners expect Kosovo’s political leaders to:
- Constitute the new Assembly without delay;
- Form a new government;
- Resolve the presidential issue in a way that avoids another institutional crisis or fresh elections.
The overall message from both London and Berlin is clear: Kosovo needs long-term political stability to continue democratic reforms, strengthen its institutions, and advance its Euro-Atlantic integration goals.
