The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Thursday that they successfully targeted and killed Ahmed Ali Balout (also referred to as Ahmed Ghaleb Balout), a high-ranking commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force, in a precision airstrike in the Lebanese capital.
The strike, which occurred on Wednesday evening, marks the first time Israel has targeted Beirut since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect in mid-April.
The Target: Ahmed Ali Balout
Balout was a veteran operative within Hezbollah’s special operations unit. According to the IDF, he held several key roles over the years, including chief of operations for the Radwan Force.
- Operational History: The IDF stated that Balout personally directed dozens of attacks against Israeli troops in southern Lebanon during the recent war, including anti-tank guided missile fire and explosive device attacks.
- “Conquer the Galilee”: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Balout was a lead architect of Hezbollah’s plan to invade northern Israel.
- Ceasefire Violations: Israeli intelligence reportedly identified Balout as the individual issuing orders for recent ceasefire violations and drone strikes against Israeli positions.
The Strike
The operation targeted a residential building in the Haret Hreik district of Dahiyeh, a known Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
- The Attack: Three missiles reportedly struck a 10-story building, reducing a significant portion of it to rubble.
- Context: This was the first strike in Beirut in nearly a month, following an April 8 suspension of strikes in the capital requested by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ceasefire on the Brink
The assassination has placed immense strain on the fragile April 17 ceasefire.
- Israeli Justification: Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement affirming that “no terrorist has immunity” and that Israel reserves the right to act against “planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks.”
- Hezbollah’s Response: While a source close to Hezbollah confirmed the death to international media, the group has yet to issue a formal official statement. The strike follows a Wednesday Hezbollah suicide drone attack that seriously wounded two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon.
Regional Tensions in May 2026
The escalation in Beirut comes at a sensitive time for regional diplomacy.
- U.S. Mediation: The U.S. has been pushing for direct talks between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Netanyahu to solidify the truce.
- Iran Connection: The strike occurred as U.S. President Donald Trump indicated a “very good chance” of a broader deal with Iran, even as naval tensions in the Strait of Hormuz fluctuated.
As residents who had recently returned to Beirut’s southern suburbs begin to flee once again, the “ceasefire that is not a ceasefire”—as described by one IDF official—remains under extreme pressure.
