The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, on Monday welcomed the announcement of an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine, while stressing that she would prefer a ceasefire that also puts an end to the killing of people.

Speaking in Luxembourg, Kallas expressed scepticism about whether Russia would respect the agreement.

She also urged the United States to impose sanctions on Russia, arguing that stronger pressure was needed to bring the war to an end.

“We would call on the United States to implement sanctions so that we can bring the war to an end,” Kallas said.
