The Kosovo Electricity Supply Company (KESCO) has issued a public appeal for electricity conservation, citing a significant increase in consumption and heavy reliance on imports.

“Kosovo is currently facing a challenging situation in the electricity sector, as demand continues to reach record levels almost daily. This sharp and ongoing rise in consumption—around 43% higher compared to the same period last year—comes at a time when domestic production capacity remains limited and insufficient. Currently, while consumption exceeds 700 MW, domestic supply includes about 315 MW from coal-based power plants and about 130 MW from renewable energy sources, which falls significantly short of daily energy needs,” the announcement states.

According to KESCO, a large portion of the country’s energy demand is being met through imports, which are being conducted under difficult economic conditions due to high and unstable international market prices.

“As a result, a significant portion of consumption is being covered by imports from international markets, at a time when prices are high and volatile.”

To cope with the situation, KESCO has called on citizens to use electricity carefully, especially high-consumption appliances during peak hours.

“This situation is creating additional challenges for the energy system, directly contributing to rising operational and management costs. In this context, we urge all citizens to be mindful and responsible in their use of electricity and to actively contribute to its conservation. Every kilowatt saved helps maintain system stability and makes it easier to manage this demanding period. We recommend that high-energy-consuming appliances—especially during peak hours—be used sparingly and only when necessary. We are in a situation that calls for joint and coordinated action from everyone, for the common good and to minimize long-term impacts,” the announcement concludes.
