April 24, 2026 – The Iranian navy has deployed new underwater mines in the Strait of Hormuz this week, further escalating tensions in the region, while the United States has sent a third aircraft carrier to the area, according to international media reports.

Citing a U.S. official and another source familiar with the matter, American forces have detected the operation and are closely monitoring developments. Officials have stated they know the exact number of mines deployed but have not disclosed the figure publicly.

Following the latest developments, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an order via Truth Social instructing the U.S. Navy to target any Iranian vessels involved in laying mines, “without hesitation.”

Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted since the escalation of the U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran on February 28, while a U.S. naval blockade was declared on April 13.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with around 20% of global oil supply passing through it daily. The increased instability has pushed oil prices higher, alongside rising shipping and insurance costs.
