NATO fighter jets were scrambled into the air following long-range missile strikes by Russia.

NATO forces launched four fighter jets during the night after Russia carried out long-range drone strikes near the Ukrainian border with Romania.

Romania is investigating whether a Russian drone crossed into NATO airspace by up to 500 meters “for a very brief period of time,” said Bucharest’s Ministry of Defense on Tuesday.

The Romanian government stated that its military had activated an air alarm in the southeastern region of Tulcea after Moscow launched a “series of drone attacks targeting civilian objects and port infrastructure” in western Ukraine.

Two Romanian F-16 fighter jets were launched from an airbase southwest of Tulcea, and two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets took off from the Mihail Kogălniceanu airbase, according to Bucharest.

Tulcea is located directly across from the Ukrainian port of Izmail, which Russia has consistently targeted. The Danube River marks the border between the two countries, just north of Tulcea.
