Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia has reportedly delivered a verbal protest note to the Embassy of Albania in Skopje regarding recent public statements made by Denion Meidani.
According to reports cited by Euronews Albania, the Albanian ambassador was summoned to the ministry in Skopje, although the meeting was attended instead by Albania’s deputy ambassador.
Sources from the ministry stated that a verbal demarche was handed over concerning what were described as “inappropriate public statements” by the ambassador, which allegedly moved “close to the line between legitimate diplomatic communication and possible interference in the internal affairs of the host country.”
The diplomatic reaction reportedly followed Meidani’s public support for Albanian students in North Macedonia who are demanding the right to take the bar examination in the Albanian language.
Authorities in North Macedonia allegedly viewed those remarks as interference in domestic affairs.
Meanwhile, the Albanian side reportedly raised concerns during the meeting regarding the treatment of around 40 Albanian students traveling by bus from Tirana to participate in protests organized by Albanian students in Skopje.
