Former U.S. President Barack Obama has criticized the Trump administration’s policy toward Iran, questioning the effectiveness of the strategy pursued after Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

In an interview with NBC, Obama said that conflicts and military interventions have resulted in significant human and financial costs without achieving the desired outcomes.

“We fought a war, spent billions and billions of dollars, placed a tremendous burden on our military. Many people have died. And it feels as though we are back where we started before the war began, except perhaps a little worse,” he said.

Obama also welcomed the recently reached ceasefire, expressing hope that it will endure in the future.

Referring to the nuclear agreement negotiated during his presidency, Obama emphasized that Iran had agreed not to develop nuclear weapons. According to the former president, the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the deal created the conditions for Tehran to expand its nuclear capabilities.

“This administration, or a previous version of it, withdrew from the agreement, which led Iran to develop greater nuclear capacity,” the former U.S. president stated.
