Polish and allied fighter jets were activated on the morning of March 29th, following missile attacks by Russia in Ukraine.
This was announced by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces of Poland.
“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in Polish airspace, which may result in increased noise levels, especially in the southwestern part of the country,” the Command stated in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The southeastern part of Poland borders Ukraine. Kyiv, meanwhile, reported on Friday that it had been subjected to Russian missile and drone attacks overnight, targeting the country’s energy infrastructure.
The activation of Polish air forces comes several days after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would not attack any NATO state, including Poland, the Baltic states, or the Czech Republic.
However, the Russian leader warned that if American-made F-16 fighter jets are used in Ukraine, they would be shot down by the Russian military.
“Of course, if these aircraft are used from air bases of a third country, for us, they will become legitimate targets,” Putin said.
Ukraine, which is facing the war initiated by Russia in 2022, is asking its Western allies to send F-16 jets to cope with the invading Russian forces.
Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands are among the countries that have pledged to provide such aircraft to Kyiv. Meanwhile, a group of countries has promised to assist in training Ukrainian pilots.
