A drone manufacturing facility in Kyiv owned by a U.S.-registered company has been destroyed in a Russian ballistic missile strike, marking what reports describe as the first known Russian attack on an American-owned company operating in Ukraine during the war.
According to sources familiar with the company, no casualties were reported in the attack.
The factory belonged to Terminal Autonomy, a Delaware-registered defense technology company that manufactures long-range precision drones and guidance systems designed to resist Russian electronic warfare and signal jamming.
The term “terminal autonomy” refers to the final phase of a kamikaze drone’s flight, when artificial intelligence takes control after radio or cellular communications have been disrupted, allowing the drone to continue toward its target without external guidance.
Anthony Vinci, a former senior U.S. intelligence official, said the ownership of the facility is unlikely to have influenced Russia’s decision to target it.
“It is still a legitimate target from Russia’s perspective. They do not care whether it is American-owned or owned by someone else,” Vinci said.
Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot air defense missiles, expanding defense cooperation between Washington and Kyiv.
Russia’s state news agency TASS was the first to report the strike, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense. While the ministry did not identify the factory as American-owned, it stated that specialists from a Ukrainian-American company had been working at the site.
The attack underscores Russia’s continued campaign against Ukraine’s defense-industrial infrastructure as Kyiv expands domestic production of advanced military technology with support from international partners.
