A powerful storm swept through the capital city of North Macedonia on Wednesday, prompting an immediate mobilization of emergency responders. Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski announced that the City Crisis Management Headquarters and specialized teams from all public municipal enterprises have been fully activated for rapid ground deployment.

Emergency service teams are maintaining continuous strategic coordination with the Crisis Management Center (CMC), the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MPB), the energy utility provider EVN, and the Skopje Fire Brigade to mitigate flash flooding, structural damage, and widespread power disruptions caused by the extreme weather conditions.

Emergency Measures Implemented

  • Overnight Deployments: Municipal crews, heavy machinery, and emergency drainage teams will remain stationed across the capital’s high-risk areas throughout the night to clear debris and handle structural emergencies.
  • Infrastructure Safety: Utility operators are actively monitoring the power grid and civil infrastructure to prevent severe system overloads or sustained blackouts.
  • Inter-Agency Task Force: Public safety personnel have established dedicated emergency channels to ensure rapid response times to citizens reporting property damage or trapped vehicles.

Mayoral Appeal: Mayor Gjorgjievski urged residents to exercise extreme caution, remain calm, and cooperate closely with on-duty civil protection units, reassuring the public that municipal institutions possess the necessary logistical resources to handle all challenges brought by the severe front.
