The United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom reacted strongly to the announcement by the Republika Srpska authorities that this entity will send a proposal for “peaceful separation” to the entity of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
There is no legal, factual or rational basis for calls for a “peaceful separation” of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU office in Bosnia and Herzegovina announced, adding that such calls lead nowhere and create unacceptable fears among citizens. .
The American Embassy in Sarajevo said that the “separation” of the Republika Srpska does not mean the end of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but of the Republika Srpska.
The British ambassador, Julian Rielly, reacted similarly, writing on X – formerly known as Twitter – that “it is not true that Republika Srpska can secede from Bosnia, nor can it exist abroad”, but only exists as a entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On May 23, the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, the Government of Republika Srpska said that within 30 days, it will write a proposal for an agreement regarding the peaceful separation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The EU, inter alia, and through EUROF, is committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, constitutional order and international subjectivity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to providing a secure environment,” said the EU office in Bosnia.
The European bloc called on the leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina “to focus their efforts on creating an environment for reconciliation and carry out the necessary reforms to achieve progress on the European path”.
The President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, after the meeting of the Government in this entity, said that he will seek the support of the Serbian leadership for the decision to split.
An attempt to separate Republika Srpska would constitute a violation of the Dayton Peace Agreement and the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which specifies the status of both entities. /
