Milan prosecutors announced that the Carabinieri (Italian military police) have seized “significant evidence” during a raid at the home of one of four Italian nationals currently under investigation for murder. The case is linked to suspected “weekend sniper” trips to Sarajevo during the Bosnian War.

According to the ongoing investigation, the suspects allegedly paid large sums of money to Serbian militias to allow them to shoot at Bosnian civilians for entertainment during the Siege of Sarajevo (1992–1995), a conflict in which approximately 11,000 people were killed.

Key Details and Seized Evidence

  • The Evidence: Prosecutors stated that the seized items include a photograph of one of the suspects—a 65-year-old man from the Alessandria area—alongside technical equipment and a silencer.
  • The Witness: The raid was executed based on testimony provided by his ex-wife and former partner, as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
  • The Testimony: During questioning, the ex-partner revealed that the suspect confessed to suffering from severe nightmares after killing people in Bosnia during the 1990s.

“He told me that he would fly out from Milan and that there were other individuals with him who spent their weekends […] acting as snipers and shooting at Muslims,” she told investigators.

Legal Status of the Suspects

While the 65-year-old suspect previously exercised his right to remain silent during prosecutor interrogations, he is one of four individuals currently being scrutinized in the probe. The other three suspects include:

  1. An 80-year-old former truck driver from the province of Pordenone.
  2. A 64-year-old businessman living in Brianza.
  3. An unidentified individual from Tuscany.

The investigation was originally sparked by allegations brought to light in the 2022 documentary film “Sarajevo Safari”, which exposed the horrific reality of wealthy foreign “war tourists” paying to target defenseless civilians.
