The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, has said that the June 7 elections are crucial for Kosovo’s political future and called for the formation of stable and functional institutions after the vote.

In an interview with IndeksOnline, Hargreaves expressed concern about the prolonged political crisis and its impact on the functioning of state institutions.

“The United Kingdom remains strongly committed to Kosovo’s security and sovereignty. But the continued political paralysis makes it harder for us and others to make a strong case in support of Kosovo,” Hargreaves said.

According to the ambassador, the upcoming elections carry particular significance because of the political situation that has developed in recent months.

“That is why these elections matter. I know there is election fatigue, but the fact that these are the third elections within 16 months makes them more important, not less. Kosovo urgently needs stable leadership. It needs a president, a parliament, and a government that can make decisions and deliver results,” he stated.

Hargreaves also highlighted institutional dysfunction, noting that the Assembly has spent extended periods unable to operate effectively.

“The Assembly has been fully functional for only around 10 weeks during the last 75 weeks. Much of that time has been spent on procedures rather than delivering impact for the people of Kosovo,” he said.

The British ambassador urged political parties to be prepared to cooperate after the elections.

“My message is simple: campaign to win, but be ready to cooperate the day after the elections. Space for compromise will be essential,” Hargreaves said.

He also called for a calm and respectful election campaign, including online, expressing concern about hostile rhetoric, particularly directed toward women.
