The Embassy of Kosovo in Washington, D.C. has announced that the Mayor of the U.S. capital, Muriel Bowser, has officially proclaimed February 17 Kosovo’s Independence Day as an official date in Washington, D.C., Rks News reports.
In her proclamation, Mayor Bowser stated that the decision recognizes the significant progress Kosovo has made since declaring independence on February 17, 2008, particularly in advancing the rule of law, protecting human rights, and strengthening its international position.
The Embassy of Kosovo expressed gratitude through a post on X, thanking Mayor Bowser for the official recognition of Kosovo’s Independence Day in Washington, D.C.
In the official proclamation, Bowser highlighted:
- Kosovo’s substantial progress in promoting the rule of law and human rights since 2008;
- The unique and enduring relationship between Kosovo and the United States, built on shared democratic values, long-term partnership, and mutual respect;
- The important contributions of Albanian-Americans to the cultural and civic life of Washington, D.C.;
- The commemoration of the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence alongside the Albanian-American community and the Embassy of Kosovo.
The proclamation formally declares February 17, 2026, as “Kosovo Independence Day” in Washington, D.C.
