Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, speaking at the solemn Government session marking the 18th anniversary of independence, said that on this day of celebration and reflection, it is impossible not to recall that representatives who participated in the declaration of independence are today being unjustly held in The Hague.

According to Kurti, each of their contributions to freedom and independence is invaluable, and history will ultimately deliver a fair judgment.

“We honor the resilience and sacrifice of our people. We honor the heroes and activists who fell throughout the centuries, the peaceful resistance and the armed uprisings after the Second World War, which culminated in the war of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Today, our independence turns 18. Perhaps a young age for a state, but an important chapter in our long journey as a people.

Indeed, our state, independence, and constitution are new, but our language, culture, and people are ancient. The State of Kosovo was built and stands on the values of freedom and democracy, equality and justice, prosperity and inclusiveness. Every citizen, regardless of language or ethnicity, religion or origin, is equal before the law.

In these 18 years, we have achieved much as a state and as a society — from the early days of international recognitions, now totaling 121, to the consolidation of democratic institutions and the rule of law. From building a sustainable and growing economy to strengthening our army and defense capacities. From international victories in sports, art, and culture to participation in global forums. From visa-free travel to concrete steps toward European integration, including applications to the European Union and the Council of Europe — achievements that make us all proud,” Kurti said.

He also praised the contribution of former KLA leaders currently detained in The Hague.

“On this day of celebration and reflection, I cannot fail to remember that the representatives who took part in the declaration of our republic’s independence are today being unjustly held in The Hague. Each of their contributions to freedom and independence is precious, and history will be the one to render the fair judgment,” he stated.
