The Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, has stated that she is awaiting presidential nominations in order to convene the session for the election of the next president. She emphasized that the entire procedure must be concluded by March 4, but noted that she cannot proceed without candidates submitting the required supporting signatures.
“As soon as I receive the signatures from the candidates—because you know that there must be 30 signatures for two candidates—we will convene the session and proceed. First and foremost, there must be meetings with all political parties represented in the Assembly of Kosovo in order to address responsibilities,” Haxhiu said.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who leads the majority party in the Assembly, the Vetëvendosje Movement, had announced meetings with political party leaders starting last week. However, as of Wednesday, no concrete steps had been observed in this direction.
Meanwhile, President Vjosa Osmani has declared her intention to seek another mandate. However, her office has not responded for three weeks to questions regarding steps she may have taken to secure parliamentary support.
Haxhiu made her remarks after concluding a meeting with the heads of parliamentary committees. According to her, discussions focused on the functioning of the tenth legislature. Among other matters, they addressed the appointment of 36 vacant positions in independent institutions, which require approval by Members of Parliament.
“For example, we have the Constitutional Court with two members awaiting election by the Assembly; there is the Judicial Council, the Prosecutorial Council, the Ombudsperson whose mandate has ended, as well as four of his deputies. Therefore, we must act without delay,” she said.
The Assembly was constituted one week ago. However, under the Constitution, it may be dissolved and early elections may be called if the election of the president fails.
