Former Anders Fogh Rasmussen has called on Europe to take greater responsibility for global leadership, warning that shifting dynamics in transatlantic relations require a stronger and more independent European role.

In an interview with Radio France Internationale, Rasmussen emphasized that while cooperation with the United States remains essential, Europe must be prepared to shape its own strategic future. “We must take care of our own destiny,” he stated, highlighting growing tensions with Washington.

Rasmussen stressed that NATO should be strengthened and reformed, with European countries assuming a more prominent role within the alliance. However, he rejected the idea of a complete split between Europe and the United States, calling instead for a more balanced partnership.

The former NATO chief also addressed the ongoing conflict involving Iran, noting that the alliance should not intervene directly in efforts to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. He suggested that individual member states may choose to act independently, depending on international mandates.

Commenting on U.S. leadership, Rasmussen criticized the approach of Donald Trump, arguing that European leaders must adopt a firmer stance. “The era of flattering is over,” he said, warning that hesitation could weaken Europe’s global position.

Rasmussen concluded that Europe must significantly increase its defense capabilities and assume greater financial and strategic responsibilities to safeguard its future. He cautioned that the erosion of U.S. leadership represents a turning point, making European unity and decisive action more critical than ever.
