A network of pro-Russian Telegram channels is increasingly shaping content in Kosovo’s Albanian-language media, raising concerns over disinformation that could exacerbate ethnic tensions, a recent BIRN Kosovo and Internews Kosova report finds.

The report highlights the Albanian-language platform of the Pravda network, which relies heavily on Telegram sources such as balkanar, infantmilitario, and others. Between September 2025 and February 2026, the network published 140 articles in Albanian, often blending factual events with commentary from Telegram administrators, blurring the line between reporting and opinion.

One example involved reports of alleged police violence against Kosovo Serbs in January 2026, which were later debunked by video evidence obtained by KALLXO.com. Despite this, the false narrative had already circulated widely on Telegram, feeding fears and calls for Serbian intervention.

Media experts stress that such disinformation campaigns are coordinated efforts with strategic goals, not just accidental misinformation. Fitim Gashi of Sbunker notes that interaction between Russian platforms and local media, particularly within the Serbian community, amplifies these narratives.

The report warns that Kosovo’s information space is increasingly influenced by foreign actors, including Russian state-linked media, and points to limited institutional capacity to counter such disinformation effectively. Editors and researchers emphasize that independent verification, multiple credible sources, and critical scrutiny are crucial to prevent misinformation from spreading.

“Kremlin-linked media take interest even in routine events in Kosovo, but they frame them in ways that fuel mistrust,” said Visar Prebreza, BIRN Kosovo editor and co-author of the report.

The findings underline the need for media literacy, fact-checking, and robust institutional responses to safeguard Kosovo’s information environment.
