The BBC has spotlighted Kosovo national football team and its remarkable journey toward a historic qualification for the World Cup, describing it as a story of rapid progress and ambitious growth.
In its analysis, the British outlet noted that Kosovo’s decisive defeat brought an end to its dream of securing a first-ever place at the tournament—less than a decade after playing its first World Cup qualifier. This, according to the BBC, underscores the extraordinary rise of one of Europe’s newest international teams.
Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008, was permitted by FIFA to play its first official international match in March 2014, a goalless draw against Haiti. The team’s early years were marked by difficult results, including a heavy 6–1 defeat to Turkey national football team.
Despite these early setbacks, Kosovo made rapid strides on the international stage. The team finished its qualifying group just three points behind Switzerland national football team, narrowly missing out on automatic qualification for the World Cup.
Their campaign continued in the playoffs, where Kosovo defeated Slovakia national football team in a thrilling 4–3 semi-final clash in Path C. However, their historic run ultimately ended with a loss to Turkey in the decisive final match, where qualification was at stake.
The BBC concludes that while the dream of reaching the World Cup has been postponed, Kosovo’s rapid development and competitive performances signal a promising future on the global football stage.
