Acting President and Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo Albulena Haxhiu announced that, together with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, she has signed the decision to extend the mandate of Petrit Ajeti as Director of the Kosovo Intelligence Agency for an additional five years.
Haxhiu said the decision reflects full trust in Ajeti’s professionalism, integrity, and leadership in safeguarding national security, as well as in strengthening Kosovo’s security institutions.
Government justification and assessment of performance
The decision was described as expected, taking into account what officials characterized as the “significant successes” of the Kosovo Intelligence Agency in recent years under his leadership.
Authorities emphasized a continued improvement of the national security situation and strengthened institutional capacity in addressing security threats.
Security cooperation and operational achievements
The statement highlighted enhanced cooperation with regional intelligence structures, including efforts linked to the Serbian Intelligence Agency, as well as reported cases involving arrests for espionage and prevention of activities deemed harmful to Kosovo’s security.
Officials also referred to the agency’s role in key security incidents and investigations, including:
- the Banjska incident
- the Iber-Lepenc case
- the disruption of paramilitary, terrorist, illegal and criminal structures allegedly linked to Serbia
The agency was also credited with contributing to reducing risks related to terrorism, radicalization, and extremism.
Broader institutional role
The government further underlined the AKI’s contribution to combating organized crime, preventing influence from non-friendly or hostile states, and strengthening domestic and international security cooperation.
Particular emphasis was placed on close partnership with strategic allies, especially the United States, as well as regional partners.
Officials concluded that AKI continues to be regarded as a credible, professional, and highly trusted institution both nationally and internationally.
