The European Union is expected to freeze funding intended for Serbia due to what officials describe as a regression in pro-European reforms, according to reporting by N1.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos is expected to formally announce the decision at today’s meeting of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET).

Serbia is reportedly set to lose around €1.5 billion from the EU’s Growth Plan because of controversial judicial reforms.

However, the final decision will depend on the opinion of the Venice Commission regarding the so-called “Mrdić laws.”

Kos has previously stated that the adoption and implementation of these laws represent a step backwards in Serbia’s EU accession path and has called for their suspension.

In addition, all six Western Balkan countries could risk losing access to more than €700 million if they fail to meet reform commitments by June 30. These obligations were originally due last year but have been extended.

Kos is expected to warn EU lawmakers that time is running out for the region to deliver on promised reforms.
