The Assembly of Kosovo has announced the suspension of today’s constitutive session, during which newly elected members of the 11th Legislature took their oath of office, but the process was not completed because no candidate was nominated for the position of Speaker of the Assembly.
The session was chaired by the oldest MP, Avni Dehari, assisted by the youngest MP, Fatma Taçi. Initially, a temporary committee was established to verify the quorum and mandates of MPs. After the committee’s report was approved, lawmakers proceeded with the oath-taking ceremony.
During the third agenda item, which concerned the election of the Speaker of the Assembly, acting Prime Minister and Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV) MP Albin Kurti took the floor.
Kurti did not nominate a candidate for Speaker but instead requested additional time to continue discussions with parliamentary parties regarding the election of the country’s new president.
Kurti said he had held meetings with PDK leader Bedri Hamza and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, adding that efforts would continue to engage with both the PDK and AAK.
“The constitution of the Assembly this time must not once again lead toward its dissolution and another round of early elections—unjustified, unnecessary for citizens, and harmful to the economy,” Kurti stated.
He called for more time to allow political parties to reach a broader agreement on the election of a new president or president of Kosovo.
Following Kurti’s speech, session chair Avni Dehari stated that since the largest parliamentary group had not proposed a candidate for Speaker, he was obliged to suspend the session.
The Assembly has not announced when the constitutive session will continue. According to a ruling by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, the deadline for constituting the Assembly expires tomorrow.
