U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely blocked (closed),” adding that Iran is desperate to reopen this vital maritime route.

According to him, Tehran does not actually want the strait to remain closed, as it generates around $500 million in daily revenue—money which, Trump claims, is being lost due to the blockade.

“They claim they want it closed only because I have completely blocked it, so they are just trying to save face,” he said. Trump also added that, according to his sources, Iran has recently requested the immediate reopening of the strait. However, he warned that such a move would make it impossible to reach any agreement with Iran, unless extreme actions are taken against the country and its leadership.

Meanwhile, the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports following the failure of peace talks earlier this month.

A second round of negotiations had been scheduled for Tuesday in Pakistan but did not take place.

At the same time, the ceasefire that was expected to end on Wednesday has been extended indefinitely without a set deadline.
