US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as Germany, following remarks related to Iran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Merz believes it is acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons, dismissing the position as misguided.

“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about! If Iran had nuclear weapons, the entire world would be held hostage,” Trump wrote, adding that he is currently taking action on Iran that other leaders should have pursued long ago.

Trump also criticized Germany more broadly, stating that it is “no wonder” the country is facing difficulties, both economically and in other areas.

His comments came in response to statements made by Merz earlier this week at an event in western Germany, where the chancellor said that Iran is humiliating the United States.
