Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call lasting more than one hour.

The Kremlin spokesperson, Yury Ushakov, said that the two presidents discussed the ceasefire with Iran, according to CNN.

“Vladimir Putin believes that Donald Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran is correct; this should provide an opportunity for negotiations and, in general, help stabilize the situation,” Ushakov stated.

He also said that President Putin and Trump discussed the war in Ukraine. The phone conversation between the U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday was described as a “friendly and professional conversation” lasting more than 1.5 hours.

The Kremlin said the call focused on the Middle East, particularly Iran, as well as the war in Ukraine.

Regarding Iran, the Russian president offered ideas on Iran’s nuclear program and expressed support for Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran.

However, the Russian president told his American counterpart that he foresees “extremely catastrophic consequences” if the United States and Israel resort again to military action in the Middle East.

For his part, according to the Kremlin, Trump believes that a deal to resolve the conflict in Ukraine is close.

Putin also proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine for Victory Day on May 9, with Trump supporting the idea. A 1.5-day ceasefire was previously in effect for Easter on April 12. However, he accused Ukraine of using “purely terrorist methods” in attacks on political targets.

Also notable is the Kremlin’s report on the “behavior of the government under Volodymyr Zelensky,” with both leaders reportedly expressing similar views that Kyiv is prolonging the conflict.

Finally, Putin strongly condemned the assassination attempt against Trump last Saturday.
