The European Democratic Party stated on Friday that Serbia’s president, Aleksandar Vučić, is attempting to present himself positively abroad, but “in reality, Serbia continues to deteriorate,” according to reports cited by Danas.

The European Democrats referred to the latest report by Reporters Without Borders, noting that the results are clear: during Vučić’s 12 years in power, Serbia has dropped from 54th to 106th place globally in terms of media freedom.

“This is not a detail, but an alarm signal. Media freedom is the foundation of democracy. A country aspiring to join the EU cannot afford such a decline. Period,” the statement said.

Serbia has fallen to 104th place out of 180 countries in this year’s World Press Freedom Index published by RSF, marking a drop of eight positions compared to last year.

The report also states that journalists in Serbia who covered anti-government protests in 2025 faced a record number of physical attacks—at least 100 incidents—many of which were allegedly carried out by police.
