EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stated that Kosovo is part of a broader European picture and that there can be no security in Europe without it.

Speaking at a joint press conference with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, she said they discussed the EU enlargement process in a wider context.

“You are today in a critical moment. First, you are ahead of elections. Second, when we talk about the enlargement process from a broader perspective, what we are witnessing today is progress, and for the first time since the last enlargement in 2013 with Croatia, there are real prospects that in the coming years we will have new member states,” Kos said.

She added that the enlargement process has been accelerated due to security considerations.

“When we discussed Kosovo’s role in this, there can be no security in Europe without Kosovo. Kosovo is an integral part of a larger picture, which is why enlargement today is much more than just enlargement. It is about ensuring security in Europe, being united, regional cooperation, and of course integration into the European Union,” she said.

Kos emphasized that one of her main priorities is to ensure a “much stronger integration” of Kosovo into the European Union.
