Today marks the commemoration of Kosovo Hero Mentor Humolli, who fell on May 21, 1999, during the Battle of Koshare, fighting for the freedom of Kosovo.
However, the story of Mentor Humolli is not only the story of a soldier of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). It is the story of a family that gave its heart and life to the Albanian nation.
Mentor was the brother of Kosovo Heroine Elfete Humolli — an Albanian woman whose tragic death shocked international opinion and became a symbol of the crimes and brutality of the Yugoslav regime against Albanians.
According to testimonies and memories of comrades and activists, the fall of Elfete Humolli marked the beginning of the moral collapse of “fascist Yugoslavia,” as the world saw the true face of a regime sustained by violence, terror, and the blood of innocent people.
Nine years later, during the spring of the liberation war, her brother Mentor Humolli took up arms to continue his sister’s legacy of freedom. It was in Koshare — where the unjust border was broken and the path to freedom was opened — that he fell heroically for Kosovo.
History shaped their legacy into two chapters of the same national sacrifice: one a symbol of the people’s suffering, the other a symbol of resistance and victory.
The contribution of the Humolli family to the nation does not end with Elfete and Mentor. Both were children of Isa Humolli — a long-time national activist and a tireless participant in the reconciliation movement of blood feuds, working alongside Anton Çetta during the most difficult times for Albanians.
This family gave not only martyrs for freedom, but also major contributors to unity, reconciliation, and national consciousness.
Today, the names of Elfete and Mentor Humolli belong not only to their family, but to the entire Albanian nation. They remain eternal symbols of sacrifice, courage, and boundless love for the homeland.
